Journalism
My Profile as a Journalist
My interest in journalism started with a passion for reading. I would spend hours engrossed in one book or another, and never had a lack of books to choose from since both my parents were educationists and had numerous books on a variety of disciplines. My passion for reading soon metamorphosed into an interest in writing. Over time, this interest has grown from being a conduit for self-expression to a desire for contributing to the African society and making relevant information available and accessible to Africans.
My journalistic career took off in 2006 when I joined the 30-member editorial board of my college’s weekly newspaper, The Mount Holyoke News. My reason for joining the newspaper was simple. I felt there was a vacuum of young African writers in the sphere of development, and I wanted to change that. I believe that access to relevant information is crucial to Africa’s development and as a result, I strive to make my articles both interesting and educational. I also ensure that I conduct thorough research on the topics at hand and employ simple language in my articles so as to make them more accessible. More importantly, I encourage dialogue and the exercise of the right to expression by posting my articles on my blog.
As an individual continuously aspiring to excellence, I hope to further develop my journalistic skills by pursuing a dual degree in Journalism and International Development at the graduate level.
